FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 1 November 2012. Washington. Hon. Bruce Lehman, Chairman and President of the International Intellectual Property Institute (IIPI), recently authored an editorial defending patents’ indispensability to modern commerce. Mr. Lehman highlights two distinctive features of the modern commercial system – the intangible nature of goods and services and the globalized nature of the marketplace. Patents, he argues, play an important role in solving challenges that arise from each of these features.

Read Mr. Lehman’s editorial on Ideas Lab, a blog discussing critical issues affecting American competitiveness. Rt. Hon. Prof. Robin Jacob, who co-authored the Institute’s Study on Specialized Intellectual Property Courts, also responded to the article.

Mr. Lehman’s editorial is a response to Michele Boldrin and David K. Levine’s recent article arguing in favor of abolishing the patent system.
